Rafael Nadal wins Hamburg title

The last two times they met, Rafael Nadal lost on clay to Fabio Fognini.

But Nadal made sure there won't be a third time as he eked out a 7-5 7-5 win over the Italian and win the bet-at-home Open in Hamburg.

Fognini, who won the title here in 2013, seemed intent on beating the Spaniard on his favorite surface once more after he broke Nadal's serve in the opening game. Nadal, however, mustered just enough grit to put away his opponent.

"I'm happy with the way I played during the week," Fognini said.

This is Nadal's 47th clay court title, two behind retired player Guillermo Vilas' record.
